HANDS OF THE SHEPHERD

As I leave my mortal shell behind, I rise in wonder the old pain is gone. I am whole and strong

again as I rise slowly upward, I’m aware of family and friends I leave behind,

perhaps a sister or brother, just down the hall,

all straining to hear the few words said,

she is gone, it is over, the cry goes out.

If only I could touch, or they could see

I am whole again, cry not for me.

But I am rising faster now, through dark and mist.

Past rolling clouds of silver, all sunlight kissed,

into the Heavens, faster and faster toward the light

I am carried by angels, one on my left, two on my right,

no words are spoken, and none need be,

I know they are sent to guide and comfort me.

As we draw near, I see old friends and have no fear,

They welcome me with love and a loud ringing cheer.

From beyond, I see a golden throne, amidst shining light,

People gathering by thousands on my left, and more on my right,

I hear a voice, rolling as thunder, and gentle as the grass, and lo, my name is called,

people part and let me pass, for I who was lost and now home at last,

I sing and rejoice as part of His flock, for I am His sheep, and He is my rock,

And I fear not the lion, not even the leopard,

for I am safe and secure, in the hands of the Shepherd.
