Lanett Police issued an updated press release regarding an adolescent gunshot victim from last night.
“On 03/23/2023 at approximately 940 PM units of the Lanett Police Department and Lanett Fire and EMS were dispatched to the New Jackson Heights Community of Lanett in reference to a 6-year-old child who had sustained a gunshot wound.
Upon the scene being secured by the police department the child was transported from the scene by Lanett EMS, before being airlifted to a trauma center”, said Lanett Public Information Officer Sgt. Kody Kent.
An investigation by the Lanett Police Department revealed that the child’s adolescent brother had gained control of an unsecured firearm in the residence and discharged it resulting in his brother sustaining a severe gunshot wound to the abdomen.
The children’s mother was taken into custody for reckless endangerment. No further information pertaining to the child’s condition can be released, the identities of the children and mother are being withheld from this press release out of consideration for the children involved.
