Post: LaFayette Man Charged in Fatal Hit-and-Run Involving Toddler
Lanett, AL.- On Tuesday, around 7:15 p.m. on October 21, 2025, Lanett Police officers and Lanett EMS responded to the 400 block of South 4th Avenue after reports that a 19-month-old child had been struck by a vehicle.
Upon arrival, officers discovered the child had succumbed to injuries sustained in the collision. The driver had left the scene before police arrived.
Investigators immediately began collecting witness statements and reviewing nearby surveillance footage, which helped identify a vehicle matching the description provided by witnesses. In the early morning hours of Wednesday, October 22, continued investigative efforts and community input led officers to the vehicle’s owner.
With assistance from the Chambers County Sheriff’s Office, deputies located and secured the vehicle at a residence in LaFayette, Alabama.
As a result of the investigation, 24-year-old Deanthony Wright of LaFayette was taken into custody and charged with vehicular homicide.
Lanett Police Chief Denise McCain and the Lanett Police Department express their sincere appreciation to the community and assisting law enforcement agencies for their swift response and cooperation in the investigation of a tragic incident that occurred Tuesday evening.
“In the early morning hours of Wednesday, October 22, 2025, we continued investigative efforts and community input led to the identification of the vehicle’s owner. With the cooperation of the Chambers County Sheriff’s Office, deputies located the vehicle at a residence in LaFayette, Alabama. The vehicle was secured pending further investigation by Lanett investigators”, said McCain in a press release.
Chief McCain extends her deepest gratitude to the citizens, the Chambers County Sheriff’s Office, and the LaFayette Police Department for their assistance and collaboration with her department.
