Opelika, AL — Southern Union State Community College will host its annual Veterans Appreciation Day Celebration on Thursday, November 6, 2025, at 10:00 a.m. in the Southern Room on the Opelika Campus Business Technology Center. The event is open to students, faculty, staff, and community members as the college honors the courage, sacrifice, and service of America’s veterans.
The ceremony will include the Presentation of Colors, the National Anthem performed by Southern Union Choir Student Gabriel Boone, and remarks recognizing distinguished guests and veterans, led by Patti Taylor, Veterans Resource Clerk and Vice President of the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 152. Kayla Kyle will share information on the Alabama GI Dependent Scholarship Program, and veteran student Jeremy Phillippi will offer a personal reflection.
The keynote address will be delivered by Major Mary Riley, Ret., a Purple Heart recipient, introduced by Southern Union Director of Human Resources, Lakiesha Barnett.
“Veterans Appreciation Day is one of the most meaningful traditions at Southern Union,” said President Todd Shackett. “It’s a time for our campus and community to come together in gratitude and respect for the men and women who have bravely served our nation.”
All are invited to join Southern Union in this special observance honoring those who have served and continue to serve our country.
