Iris Ray Downs, a beacon of warmth and affection, departed this world on September 2, 2025, in her lifelong hometown of Valley, AL, at the age of 74. Born on December 5, 1950, to the late Jonnie Ray Taylor and Guy Morgan Ray, Sr., Iris was a cherished member of her community, and her absence leaves a void filled with fond memories.

Iris treasured education and was proud to be an alumna of Valley High School. Her professional life commenced in cotton mills, where she exemplified diligence and tenacity. Iris embraced her entrepreneurial spirit as a valued AVON representative, earning the love and respect of all those she encountered.

Beyond her professional endeavors, Iris’s heart belonged to the simple pleasures of life. She was an avid cook whose culinary delights brought joy to family gatherings. Iris’s love for sports was epitomized in her enthusiasm for softball; her spirit and energy on the field were unmatched. An unwavering Auburn fan, Iris cheered for her team with a passion that mirrored her approach to life – utter devotion.

Not one to remain idle, Iris found tranquility in nature, often seen fishing or tending to her beloved animals. Her favorite TV shows provided moments of laughter and relaxation, brightening her days and evenings.

Above all, Iris was defined by the love she dedicated to her family. Her legacy continues through her cherished daughter and caregiver, Kim Simpson (Kevin), and her brothers Frank A. Ray, Sr. (Paulette) and Guy M. Ray, Jr. (Esther). Her joy was multiplied by the love of her grandchildren, Matt Foster (Amber), Ryan Simpson, and Jorden Crosson (Parker), and further blossomed with her great-grandchildren, Vaeda and Noah Crosson. A host of nephews and cousins also survive her, each enriched by her unending kindness.

Preceded in death by her beloved husband, Carl Wayne Downs, her devoted parents, and her loving sister, Dana Ray Johnson, Iris now reunites with them in a place of eternal peace.

Iris’s life was an embodiment of love, imbued with kindness and generosity. To know her was to witness the genuine compassion that profoundly impacted the lives of those around her. She exits this stage of existence having contributed immeasurably to the fabric of her family and community. Her memory serves as a guidepost for those aspiring to live with benevolence and grace. The world is undoubtedly better for having been graced by Iris Ray Downs. Her light continues to shine in the countless lives she touched.

In lieu of flowers donations can be made First Christian Church of Riverview in Valley.

Funeral services for Iris will be held on Friday, September 5th, 2025, at 2:30 PM (EDT) at the Johnson Brown-Service Funeral Home Chapel in Valley. Interment will follow in Fairview cemetery in Valley, Alabama. Pastor Ron Shepard will officiate. Iris’s family will receive friends Friday afternoon at the funeral home from 1:30 PM (EDT) until the service hour.
