On Friday, the community made their way to the Langdale Farmers Market for Free Tomato Sandwich Day, a long-standing tradition in Valley.
“This started about 30 years ago with Evan Mason at Mason’s Produce in Langdale and we would run it all day. Back then, Mason was growing tomatoes, had a tomato field, and came up with the idea of a Tomato Sandwich Day.
When he passed away we moved it here to keep the tradition going. We continue the free Tomato Sandwich Day and I wish we could name this place after him”, said longtime supporter Ray Edwards.
The crowd was steady as the community purchased fruits and vegetables from local farmers and vendors.
The City of Valley made an estimated 200 tomato sandwiches along with delicious Lemonade for the occasion. In August, the city will host a Free Watermelon Slice Day.
