Earlier this month, local fisherman and Lanett resident Aivis Tumovs did something that has never been done while fishing on West Point Lake as he reeled in a 72-pound Blue Catfish making it the biggest catfish ever caught on West Point Lake.
“I was trolling on West Point Lake last Thursday and noticed my fish finder located a 5-foot-long fish in the bottom of my finder. I then sat in that spot for about three hours with no bites and the weather had then dropped to 27°. I was about 10 minutes away from wrapping it up. I then noticed that one of my reels went down and I then followed the fish to the anchor on the boat. About three minutes later I got him in the boat and the the first words out of my mouth were I think this might be a record”, said Tumovs
Local Catfish Angler Director Nathan Inkman then met Tumovs at Highland Marina to weigh the big Blue Catfish. Inkman has certified scales as the fish weighed in at 72 pounds exactly.
Georgia Outdoor News verified and confirmed on Monday that Tumovs is the new record holder on West Point Lake for the biggest catfish ever caught and it is now in the official books.
“This is very emotional for me. Our community has excellent fishermen, and I am so proud to be part of this amazing fishing community. I just want everyone to know that you don’t have to travel all over to catch a big fish because they are right here on West Point Lake”, added Tumovs.
You can go by Bluffton Bait and Tackle in Lanett to hear of Tumovs record breaking experience and while you are there pick up some fishing gear because you could be the next one to reel in a monster fish.
