June 23, 1946 ~ December 24, 2024 (age 78)
Clay Calhoun passed away peacefully on Christmas Eve, December 24, 2024, at Bethany House in Auburn, Alabama. Born on June 23, 1946, in Langdale, Alabama, Clay was a source of intelligence, creativity, and friendliness that illuminated the lives of those around him.
Clay’s journey through life was marked by enduring love and loyalty, best exemplified by his 54-year marriage to his beloved wife, Nancy. His family was the center of his universe and included his cousin, Cary Calhoun (Lane) of Bremen, Georgia, and his brother-in-law, David Williams of Seneca, South Carolina. He carried in his heart the memory of his late parents, Sam and Annie Jo Calhoun, and his sister, Bonnie C. Williams, who preceded him in death.
Professionally, Clay was a well-respected designer, having lent his creativity to esteemed textile companies such as Milliken, West Point Pepperell, and Interface. His diverse career also included a period where he shared his compassionate nature with Johnson Brown-Service Funeral Home and the families they served.
Clay was much more than his professional accomplishments; he was a font of local knowledge, a walking encyclopedia who could speak at length on a myriad of subjects. An authority on antiques, he was often sought after for his expertise to appraise and sell estates. His skills also shone brightly as a gifted floral designer. Above all, Clay was known for his great sense of humor, a quality that drew people to him and left an indelible mark on all who knew him.
Clay Calhoun’s legacy is one of love, laughter, and the distinctive beauty that he brought into the world through both his art and his spirited conversation. He will be dearly missed and forever remembered.
