OPELIKA, Ala. – On 07/16/2024, at approximately 11:28 p.m., Opelika Dispatch received a call regarding a possible structure fire in the 400 Block of 8th Street in Downtown Opelika. Upon arrival, Opelika Police and Fire saw heavy smoke in the area and began clearing the buildings while attempting to find the source. Once first responders were able to ensure the buildings were clear, they began to extinguish the fire.
As of 5:30 a.m., the fire is contained however they continue to monitor for hotspots. The extent of damage to the surrounding buildings is unclear. Once the site is clear, the Opelika Fire Department will conduct an investigation to determine the cause of the fire.
“We appreciate the agencies who responded to assist: Auburn Fire, Lee County Emergency Management Agency, Opelika Power, Opelika Water, Spire Gas, and EMS”, said the City of Opelika in a press release.
“We are grateful for the quick response from the Opelika Fire Department that prevented this fire from spreading to other structures. We appreciate the Auburn Fire Department’s response, too. There were no injuries and the cause of the fire has not yet been determined”, added the City of Opelika.
