A crowd of an estimated fifty was in attendance for the swearing-in ceremony as West Point Mayor SteveTramell did the honors of swearing in Carter. Those in attendance were former West Point Police Chiefs Tony Biley and David Carr as well as former Lanett Police Chief Johnny Wood, Sergeant Stewart Smith from the Troup County Sheriff’s Department, and many others in the law enforcement community which included the West Point Police Department.
Joining Tramell for the swearing-in ceremony were councilmembers Rev. Gerald Ledbetter, Gloria Ramsey Marshall, Sandra Thornton, and Deedee Williams as well as City Manager Ed Moon, City Clerk Richard McCoy, Department heads, and staff.
Carter who has been with the West Point Police Department since 2011 has been a model of consistency and has been the interim Chief over the last 5 months.
“I am looking forward to bringing my own ideas to the table and hopefully making them work. It’s going to be extremely critical especially in a small town to be in the community. Right now there is a divide in the community and I want to try and help bridge that gap”, said Carter.
The West Point Police Chief tells the Chambers Ledger that he plans to continue community programs such as “Coffee with a Cop”, Neighborhood Watch meetings, Citizens’ and Youth Police Academy with a twist”, added Carter.
